Cuilapam
The former convent of Cuilápam de Guerrero was built around the 1530s when the area was an important indigenous settlement. The Dominican Order arrived in Oaxaca as part of a broader strategy by the Catholic Church to expand its influence in New Spain. The temple is also a significant historical site: Vicente Guerrero, a Mexican national hero and independence leader, known for his fight for freedom and social justice was assassinated there in 1831. The complex remains in ruins today, but very worth visiting. One of the most significant aspects are the murals and other decorative elements and the wonderful panoramic view, while located on a small hill.
